Ogun: Oro worshippers remanded for attacking Muslims in Idiroko

Five Oro worshippers have been charged with allegedly attacking some Muslims in the Idiroko area of Ogun State’s Ipokia Local Government Area.

Abimbola Oyeyemi, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, verified this to DAILY POST on Thursday.

The Oro adherents had previously imposed a daylight curfew on inhabitants of Idiroko and its surrounds, according to the DAILY POST.

This, our correspondent gathered, was done in violation of a court order and several agreements signed between them and other religious leaders.

Crisis started on Tuesday, when some Muslims ignored the curfew to pray in a Mosque.

It was learnt that the Oro adherents had attacked a Muslim cleric, Bola Wasiu by inflicting matchette cuts on his head.

In an interview with the police spokesperson, it was said that the arrested Oro worshippers would be in prison custody pending when they would be able to perfect their bail conditiions.

Oyeyemi disclosed that the traditionalists have been severally invited to Abeokuta for peace talks.

He mentioned that the Commissioner of Police has also visited the area to sensitise the people on why it is illegal to impose daylight curfew on people in the 21st century.

The PPRO wondered why a group of people would, all in the name of Oro festival, prevent Muslims and Christians from serving their God.

He also kicked against the closing of schools during week days and the stopping of people from embarking on their daily business activities because of Oro curfew.

Oyeyemi said, “Yes, we have arrested about five of the Oro adherents and they have been charged to court. They attacked a mosque and injured the Islamic cleric. We have been warning them from time to time. even the Commissioner of Police took his time to go there to talk to them, but they didn’t listen. We have invited them severally for meetings.

“There is nowhere a person or group of persons, under the guise carrying out your religious activity, will now declare curfew in daylight. What about other people who also want to worship God in their own way? So, they mean the Christians should not go to church, Muslims should not go to mosque and the children should not go to school? Where does that happen in this 21st century?

“These ones have been arrested and charged to court. The court admitted them on bail but they are yet to perfect their bail conditions. Of course, they will be remanded till they meet their bail conditions,” Oyeyemi explained.
